How Is Moxidectin Used?
Whether your pet spends a majority of time inside your home or outdoors, it may be susceptible to heartworm disease and intestinal worms, such as roundworms, whipworms and hookworms. These worms can cause infected animals serious discomfort and health problems. And in severe cases, may cause death.
Fortunately, common internal and external parasites can be prevented, treated and controlled. The Companion Animal Parasite Council (CAPC) recommends year-round treatment with heartworm disease preventatives that have broad-spectrum activity against parasites with zoonotic potential (intestinal worms) and year-round flea preventatives.
Moxidectin is an active ingredient found in products given to animals, such as dogs, cats, horses, and cattle, for the treatment and/or control of some of the most common internal and external parasites. For example, it is used for the treatment and/or control of:
- Dogs1, 2: heartworm disease, roundworms, hookworms, whipworms and mites.
- Cats3: heartworm disease, roundworms, hookworms, and ear mites.
- Horses4: small strongyles, large strongyles, bots, roundworms, pinworms, hairworms, stomach worms, and tapeworms.
- Cattle5: gastrointestinal roundworms, lung worms, cattle grubs, mites and lice.
- Sheep6: internal parasites, such as barber pole worm
Moxidectin works on parasites by selectively binding to high affinity glutamate-gated chloride ion channels and agonist activity at GABA complexes, which are critical to the function of invertebrate nerve and muscle cells. This interferes with neurotransmission resulting in paralysis and, ultimately, death of the parasite.
Treatments and/or controls with moxidectin come in a variety of applications, including orals and topical solutions. Talk to your veterinarian about what treatment is best to use and how to correctly apply it.
